The music scene in the East is more exciting than the West…

The title itself is a bold claim but the modality of music market seems to be shifting towards the East. The East is like a health resort for restoring a failing music careers for musicians from the West. I hear many musicians would head to Japan when their popularity and marketability loses its appeals in the United States for instance. These musicians/bands seems to ressurect their status as a rock band and garner followings in thousands as compared to the dwindling fans at home base as well as diminishing status as Rock stars!

I recently saw the legendary Deep Purple here in the States, not even a thousand fans came to see them perform! I was amazed! But of course there are hundreds of concerts going on the same day, from local to international gigs. There are literarily upto hundreds of gigs from coffee house, bars to concert halls, church halls, underground clubs, open air, theatres and auditoriums each single day here in San Francisco Bay Area. The competition is fierce. For a local band, if 50-100 people shows up that is considered a good successful gig! Arena/stadium mega concerts are thing of the past now, its a rare occurance.

The East is hungry for the West performers and the market is readily profitable even at a discounted rates from a  western point of marketing sensibility. Western bands are not going to just show up for the sake of adventure and cultural exploration. But they will come to make huge profit!  I am tempted to make this assumption that the more the Western bands come to explore and exploit the music market in NE India or specifically Nagaland, our upcoming local bands and musicians will suffer.  I hope Nagaland can limit western bands to maybe once or twice a year event, more than that would be an exploitation and stealing away livelihoods from the local music scenes.

Is the West ever hungry for the music scene from the East? Very rarely. The music soil in the West is overused and almost barren like overused shifting cultivated soil in Nagaland. Read the rest of this entry »

Guitar effects can make a good guitarist even better!

There are so many guitar players who swore by the tone of the amp only, or are they?  Likewise many guitarists cannot live without effects whether pedals or rack mount,  analog or digital.  I do frequent BOSS to Line6 POD, Digitech, Morley, Rogerlinn and VOX. Effects on digital Recorders are cool but they are not that great. I never like the idea of adding effects after the song is recorded. If a producer or engineer try to add effects and colorings without my consent, surely there will be bad blood, no matter how renowned these producers and engineers are.  Sounds reflects your personality, therefore even pedals play an inportant parts in helping you discover who you are, sonically.

Guitar effects had revolutionized many genres of music. Modern guitarists must keep in pace with the fast pace technology.  Imagine U2 guitarist without his assortments of delays and echos which are the main ingredients to U2 signature sound. Another example, Pantera Dimebag Darrell and Metallica’s Hetfield and Kirk Hammett and Creed’s Mark Tremonti without those mega sounding distortion/overdrive that is like blood for their music, they would be nowhere today, thanks to guitar effects.

Best of the best according to….1 - 30

I am as usual sleepless, no it is just my lifestyle, it’s 1.06 am in the morning and I thought I will rummage on who I think are the best guitar players…but just don’t ask me why? This is based on personal taste and influences.  Randomly jotting down as my wide awaken mind try to make sense of this unimportant self-inflicted “best of the best” category.  Suggest if you wish to. Okay here are 30 best of the best:

1. Jeff Beck? Hmmmm the undenialable futuristic sound as well as those haunting blues…who can resist?

2. Joe Satriani, he is just too good so many musicians hates him! Unmatched melody maker.

3. Gary Moore, starving for some raw tones, try Gary Moore.

4. Mark Knopfler clean melodious classic tones

5. Jason becker, innovative and brilliant guitarist

Music must go on…..

I feel numb, sad and angry whenever I hear of bad news from home! Everyone seems to be in some sort of a mission on earth, some to heal, encourage and inspire yet some seems to be on a mission to destroy anything that is good and peaceful.

I like to say, music is on the mission as well, even when the burdens are heavy, we need to sing and play our instruments and tread either alone or in unison to promote peace on earth, not only during Christmas season but each and everyday!  Music definitely is good medicine and good for the soul. It can also bring community together, eg: hornbill festival and rattle and hum etc…
